FAQ

Got questions? Good — we’d be concerned if you didn’t.

How do I get there?

We’re located just outside Petroleum, West Virginia, surrounded by over 15,000 acres of uninterrupted wilderness.

Our land backs up to:

  • 10,000+ acres of the Hughes River Wildlife Management Area (south and southeast)

  • 5,600 acres of the Walker Wildlife Management Area (west)

  • 1,000+ acres of privately held forestland (north)

There are no towns or developments between you and the trees — just deep Appalachian backcountry.

Distances to us:

  • ~1 hour from Parkersburg, WV via the 50

  • ~1 hour from Clarksburg, WV via the 50

  • ~1 hour 45 minutes from Charleston, WV via the 77 to the 50

  • ~2.5 hours from Columbus, OH via the 50

  • ~6 hours from Charlotte, NC straight up the 77 to the 50

The final approach is off-road. We’ll send detailed directions after you book.

How many people can stay at one outfitted camp?

Each outfitted campsite can comfortably accommodate up to 6 guests, typically:

  • 2 adults in a luxury outfitted tent with extra-large, comfortable cots and mattress pads

  • Up to 4 small children in junior-sized bunk cots with standard sleeping bags inside the same tent

  • A secondary mini tent with full-size cots can be added for older kids or additional guests

All bedding, lighting, seating, and shelter are included. You bring your people — we’ve got the rest.
Additional junior cots and mini tents can be added during checkout.

Can I drive my own UTV to my campsite?

Yes — all of our campsites are UTV-accessible.

  • Trailhead Primitive Camps are located near the forest’s edge with easy UTV, 4x4, or hiking access.

  • Outfitted Camps are deeper in the woods. If you don’t have an off-road vehicle, we’ll personally haul you and your gear in.

  •

Each campsite is limited to 2 off-road vehicles max, out of respect for the land and to preserve the quiet, low-impact nature of the forest.

Note: Recreational riding is limited to public back roads. Our private land is not open for trail riding — but your UTV is welcome for site access and off-site exploration.

Is there cell signal or Wi-Fi at the campsites?

Most sites do not have cell reception — and that’s part of the magic.
We are working on a Wi-Fi welcome hub near the entrance only, but it is not available yet.
Plan ahead and embrace the digital detox.

What should I pack for a Trailhead Primitive campsite?

Think classic backwoods camping:

  • Tent (your site includes one tent pad, approx. 10' x 14', suitable for a standard large tent)

  • Sleeping gear

  • Cooking gear

  • Lighting

  • Food, cooler, and personal items

  • Bug spray- especially for ticks

  • Fishing pole*

These campsites are designed for one group or family only, and space is limited to one main tent per pad.

We recommend packing in bins or soft duffels for easier UTV transport.

*Fishing is allowed, but it’s strictly catch and release to protect native species and keep our waters thriving for future guests.

What should I bring for an Outfitted campsite?

Just the essentials:

  • Food and cooler

  • Clothing and toiletries

  • Bug spray- especially for ticks, and any favorite comfort items

  • Your fishing pole*

We provide the rest: tent, bedding, chairs, lanterns, cookware, and more.

*Fishing is allowed, but strictly catch and release — to help restore and protect the native fish population for future guests and the health of the ecosystem.

Can we bring pets?

Not at this time. For their safety — and to protect the local wildlife — pets are not permitted at any campsites.

Are there bears?

Yes — along with bobcats, deer, owls, and otters. You're deep in Appalachian wilderness.
Wildlife sightings are very possible.

  • Keep food sealed

  • Gear zipped

  • Respect the forest

We’ve never had a dangerous encounter — and we intend to keep it that way.

Can I have a fire at my campsite?

Yes — all sites include a dedicated fire ring.

  • Outfitted Camps come with one complimentary starter bundle of firewood and fire starters; additional bundles are available for purchase.

  • Primitive Campers may bring their own or buy firewood at check-ins.

Is there running water?

Nope — we’re fully off-grid.

  • Outfitted Camps receive daily fresh water refills

  • Primitive Campers must bring their own or request refills at designated times

What if we need gas, groceries, or ice while we’re there?

Just a 15-minute ride from camp, the Crossroads General Store is a well-stocked little outpost that has just about everything you might’ve forgotten — or run out of.

You’ll find gas, groceries, ice, firewood, snacks, drinks, wine, fishing tackle — a little bit of everything.

It’s rural, it’s simple — and it’s exactly what you need when the cooler’s low and the fire’s calling.
